Woman fined $200 for drunken escapade that landed her in hospital

(Newser) – An 18-year-old New Zealand woman had to go to the hospital and pay a fine after a drunken dare—flash oncoming traffic—caused one motorist to plow into her. Cherelle Dudfield escaped the accident with minor cuts and bruises, but police were not amused. “This girl put herself at risk with the actions that she undertook,” an officer tells 3 News. “Not only herself, but the motorists on the road."

After being fined around $200 for her transgression, Dudfield appears to have gained some perspective—and wisdom. “Don't be me,” she says. “Don't be stupid, don't get drunk and stand in the middle of the road and flash anyone, 'cause it hurts when you get hit.”

(NEWSER) - A grisly multi-car pileup killed at least seven people and injured 51 today on the M5 freeway in southwestern England, the Daily Mail reports. Enveloped in a dark fog, 30 cars and four trucks collided on the wet roadway and triggered a "massive fireball," police say. Motorists tried to pry open car doors, and emergency responders rescued injured drivers, but police say bodies left "burnt and unrecognizable" may still be trapped in several vehicles. More»

(NEWSER) - Dust storms are once again rolling across Arizona, leading to a series of crashes that killed one person and shut down Interstate 10 for hours. Another six people are in critical condition following the three accidents yesterday, the Arizona Republic reports. One pile-up involved 16 vehicles, the BBC notes. (NEWSER) - Michelle Brown and her daughter were watching TV when they heard the crash. Her son ran in and delivered the news: “He said, ‘Momma, there’s a truck in the ceiling!’” Brown recalls. (AP) - Texas billionaire and philanthropist Charles Wyly, whose family donated millions of dollars to Republican causes and Dallas arts projects, has died after a car accident in western Colorado, authorities say. He was 77. Wyly, who maintained a home near Aspen, was turning onto a highway near the local airport when his Porsche was hit by a sport utility vehicle yesterday.
