Tooth Fairy as Fun as Dental Work

One-gag Dwayne Johnson vehicle fails to impress

(Newser) – Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson in a tutu is pretty much the only thing Tooth Fairy has going for it, and critics aren’t exactly enchanted. Here’s what they’re saying:

Tooth Fairy is nothing but a “charmless and underdeveloped knockoff of The Santa Clause,” writes Lou Lumenick of the New York Post. “Basically, if you've seen the ads, you've seen the only joke in this one-joke movie.”

“This just might be the de-evolution of family entertainment,” writes Claudia Puig in USA Today. Johnson’s affable, and it’s funny seeing him in a pink tutu, but ultimately Tooth Fairy is “about as enjoyable as a root canal.”
The movie’s “barely more than the pitch meeting that spawned it,” says Wesley Morris of the Boston Globe, but Johnson is irresistible to kids. “Beneath those enormous pecs beats the heart of a Muppet.”
Roger Ebert concurs. “There's no way I can recommend this movie to anyone much beyond the Tooth Fairy Believement Age,” he writes for the Chicago Sun-Times, "but I must testify it's pleasant and inoffensive”

It HAS to be better than DOOM....lol...I dont give a rats rolling rectum what the critics think..I'm taking my little girl to see it..I had the misfortune of seeng the Squeequel and THAT was a awful movie..but the neices loved it..they are in first grade...It's a kids movie...for kids..no sex no rape no murder, no hidden enviromental or political implications...just a fun movie..I hope...

(NEWSER) - Critics agree: Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is ridiculous. But they're divided over whether the silliness of the sequel, once again starring Nicolas Cage as the devilish superhero, is funny or just bad.

In the Merced Sun-Star , Roger Moore calls the movie "a profoundly silly mash-up of comic book and quasi-religious 'prophecy' about a motorcyclist who sold his soul to the devil." It beats the original: "This time around, Cage and everybody else on board are in on the joke," and that makes it "almost a great bad movie."

(NEWSER) - In The Vow, Rachel McAdams plays a woman who must learn to love her husband again after amnesia wipes her memory. It's no surprise it was released ahead of Valentine's Day: It's pure mushiness, critics say.

In the New York Daily News , Elizabeth Weitzman calls the film a "down-the-middle, by-the-numbers fantasy, in which no one is too quirky or interesting or challenging in any way." Still, "there’s no shortage of viewers ready to embrace an old-fashioned, guilty-pleasure romance."

Streep Wows as Iron Lady

Helps redeem otherwise mediocre film

(NEWSER) - As a biopic, The Iron Lady is nothing to write home about—but critics are blown away by Meryl Streep's typically excellent performance as Margaret Thatcher:

The film contains "little sense of the outside world, the human cost, or the ripple effect of divisive government policies. It is a movie that gives us Thatcher without Thatcherism," writes Xan Brooks in the Guardian . But Streep "is the one great weapon of this often silly and suspect picture." She offers "a masterpiece of mimicry."

Jack and Jill 'Stupefyingly Unfunny'

Movie may be Sandler's worst ever, prompts call for his retirement

(NEWSER) - Adam Sandler’s latest comedy, in which he plays his own twin sister, is mind-numbingly bad, reviewers say—so poor, in fact, that it languished at a remarkable 0% on Rotten Tomatoes , which calls it “impossible to recommend on any level whatsoever," for most of the morning:

“More than 24 hours has passed since I watched the new Adam Sandler movie Jack and Jill and I am still dead inside,” writes Mary Pols in Time . “It made me feel as if comedy itself were a dirty thing, mainly practiced by people eager to express ugly feelings toward everyone from homely women to Mexican immigrants.”

Footloose Lacks New Moves, But Not Energy

(NEWSER) - The remake of Footloose, starring Kenny Wormald as a young man who shakes up a dance-free town, isn't much different from the original. But that's not necessarily bad:

"This incarnation of Footloose may not make as great a dent in the current generation as the original film had," writes William Goss at Film.com , "but it does offer up a commendable amount of energy and heart" and "ultimately proves itself worthy of that title."
