Perhaps public displays of affection go too far

(Newser) – Birds do it. Bees do it. Even Tipper and Al do it. Smooch sloppily in public, that is. A recent rash of public heavy petting has Miss Manners everywhere exasperated, CNN reports. The year’s most outrageous makeout may be Richard Gere’s caresses of a Bollywood actress, leading to storms of protest across India, but it's hardly an isolated incident.

“Mr. Social Grace,” a Vancouver etiquette columnist, advises that “extreme PDA” of the deep-tonguing variety is a definite no-no. But he cites a deeper cultural shift at work than whether second base is the new first base: “The problem isn't that most people don't know where PDA is inappropriate. The problem is that some people just don't care.”

In moderation, and in the right venue, they're fine, said Charles Purdy, a Vancouver, British Columbia-based etiquette columnist. I'll say that any PDA beyond the hand-holding, arm-around-the-waist, closed-mouth-kiss type is out of order.
