Times Square Bomb Suspect Arrested at Airport

A suspect in the failed car bomb attack on Times Square was taken into custody late last night while trying to flee the country. Faisal Shahzad, 30, of Connecticut, is being held in New York. Shahzad is a Pakistan-born US citizen who recently returned from a trip to Pakistan and bought the 1993 Nissan Pathfinder used in the failed attack, according to law enforcement officials. He was prevented from boarding a flight to Dubai at New York's JFK Airport, reports the New York Times

"It's clear that the intent behind this terrorist act was to kill Americans," Attorney General Eric Holder told reporters early this morning. Shahzad bought the car he used in his failed bomb on Craigslist. He paid $1,300 in cash to a 19-year-old college student. The National Security Agency has been tracking his cell phone calls, reports the New York Daily News. "This investigation is ongoing, as are our attempts to gather useful intelligence, and we continue to pursue a number of leads," said Holder. (More Times Square stories.)
