Wow. Pot. Just like that, on its way to being legalized. Well, just like that after 50 years or so.

In order to save itself from financial oblivion, the state of California seems inclined to just do it. Just say yes. To become Amsterdam.

It may be the biggest thing to come out of the financial meltdown. We won’t get meaningful reform of the banking system, but we’re going to get legalized pot.

This is partly because the Justice Department has just issued new guidelines to prosecutors telling them not to override state laws about medicinal marijuana use. And because California’s governor (a pot smoker from way back) is gently encouraging the legalization movement to help him out of his terrible financial mess. And because everybody in California already smokes pot anyway.

All right, it is not yet a done deal. The federal government is still harrumphing about how it will draw the line at recreational use. But legalization is clearly headed to a ballot initiative. And California ballot initiatives are, often, in themselves culturally transformative. So California goes for pot by a wide margin, leaving Washington in a fix. A Democratic president is hardly going to resist the party’s most crucial state.

So forget health care. Obama is going to be the pot president. Hell, Franklin Roosevelt, in his Depression, saw the end of prohibition.

The implications, after so long, after so many years of the war on drugs, are hard to fathom. Quite possibly nothing at all happens. The potheads are still the potheads. Everybody else is still getting up and going to work. Or there is a new cultural divide: the liberals with their pot, and the conservatives with their sobriety. As likely, the cultural divide breaks down because everybody is high.

At any rate, it won’t help the general concept of authority. On the other hand, pot undermined authority a long time ago. So it may be good to have an official, even historic, event wherein the established social structure formally shrugs its shoulders and acknowledges defeat.

That’s not all that different from where we are on so many fronts: our wars, our economy, the health care system. It’s hard to argue that as a society we get it right all that often.

So pot. That symbol. That bugaboo. That persistent reminder that control is elusive, that human weakness wins out. Why not?

For people my age the legalization of pot is the fitting and maybe necessary coda.

But don’t tell my son.

hey queen.... why not.... pot is safer over all than alcohol. how many fifteen year old girls get raped by pot heads? Not mention alcohol shuts down the frontal lobe. Hence the reason men love to fight! I'm not saying pot is good but I'm just saying!

You dear effay don't know a lot of neuroscience. Drunk goes through tummy acids, intestine stuff, liver ducts and kidneys. Yeah, drink a fifth a day, and you'll die in thirty years. THC goes from lung to blood and crosses the blood brain barrier and sits its ass down and doesn't come out. Why do you think people on pot never commit horrific crimes--cause their frontal lobe is non-functioning. Yeah! On the no horrific crime, but bad on that brain. And, liquor kills no doubt about it--it kills your liver, pancreas and kidneys--but THC kills your brain cells--fast. No shitting. What would you like to choose for your son?

I choose for my son to have a brownie (smoking anything is bad) once in while while partying, instead of getting hammered with cheap beer.

@deebles can you cite studies in which brain cells are killed "fast" by pot? To my knowledge there have been no definitive studies (replicable) on WHAT pot does or even what receptors are affected. It's been a while since I researched so I'd like to know your sources.

Im 66 & my bff has ALWAYS smoked, but worked hard, raised kids & grandkids, pays her taxes, pays her bills, has a GOOD job at age 68, is healthy as a horse, walks a mile or more a day, & on & on & on. Its not my cuppa, but then Im borderline miserable alot of the time, so you see? back in the late 60's & early 70's in the suburbs of Los angeles, like South Gate & Huntington Park, the dope we bought was always "named", for the day it was legalized, & there was always a difference in quality...but not weight..I don' think it matters what drug you choose, pills from the drugstore, or pot from 'that" drugstore. People are people..some will use as an aid to life's stresses, and some will abuse to escape accountabililty. After 66 years, this much I know to be true, at least for the people ive met along the way. Reply

Has made you, you mean. I figured myself out on pot, my life. For me, it really lets me look at things from different perspectives, any perspective my minds shifts to. That's why I feel like I'm "flying through dimensions" when I'm high. I think the age will be lowered to 18 within 15 years of legalization.

"the liberals with their pot, and the conservatives with their sobriety" Oh, really? Guess you don't know any conservatives, because their drug of choice is alcohol -- which explains much of their behavior. As for legalization, I'll believe it when I see it. Lenny Bruce used to say back in the 60s that pot would be legal by 1980 because so many lawyers smoked it. Guess that didn't happen. Reply

Good thing the Mexican drug lords don't have lobbyists in the U.S., because this is bound to put them out of business. Imagine if legalizing pot dragged Mexico back from the brink of civil war? Wouldn't that be a nice additional benefit. Reply

You don't have to smoke it. Canadians in BC grow it and make it into butter so you can put it on your bread! It's legal for medical use in Canada and its highly taxed and regulated. America is behind the times on this as usual. Reply

the idea that pot kills brain cells is a farce. the studies behind it show that the monkeys they tested it on were breathing heavy smoke for up to 5 minutes at a time. if anything or anyone were to breathe smoke for 5 minutes straight it will kill brain cells for sure. but as a smoker/ingester/vaporizer my mind actually expands because it takes away the level of aggression that alcohol is so famous for. as far as the rest of the story, i'll see it when i believe it and i'll help fight that battle. there are a lot of misconceptions about pot that have been propagated through the media and our government, I'm happy to say that even though i don't smoke (got a job to keep ya know) it is beneficial to many people. it can be used instead of many pharmaceuticals which are harmful to the body and are unnatural. If legalized it could create many jobs (literally green jobs) and stimulate CA's economy. $14 billion is the number i've heard. Smoke pot and be happy people. It can give you insight and a different perspective on the world! Reply

It's about time govt. realized it's a big mistake to try to keep people from their pursuit of happiness. Just as the prohibition of alcohol not only failed but created an entire gangster black market with ensuing murder and mayhem, today we have the same- drug laws causing more damage than the drugs, and jails overflowing with non-violent drug offenders who would otherwise be productive citizens.(No duh economy is failing!) Face it- the war on drugs is unwinnable. The people will always do what they want to do.Lets use it as an asset instead of a liability. Reply

Lets not go overboard on this whole pot is a positive thing. People claim that it helps certain people well go get a perscription which i believe you can do in California. However to deny the negative affects of pot is crazy. Most of the people I know that smoke pot on a regular basis are very unmotivated, somewhat slow and drifting through life. There is the occasional person who breaks the mold but like any drug when used reguarly it has side effects that affects people differently. Alcohol also has negative affects however many people are forgetting a key difference; alcohol is not soley intended for intoxication many people enjoy a beer or wine without overindulging. Note that there was an alcohol vapour machine that got you drunk without a hangover which was banned a few years back because its sole purpose was intoxication. Also lets not demand progression in society and governmnet for the sake of it. Reply

Based on your logic we should simply reverse every single law and social norm all for the sake of progression. Sounds like a fantastic idea because every single decision our contry has made in it existance is completly wrong and therefore the opposite is correct. Sounds to me like BIZARRO WORLD.

It used to be legal, but was made illegal when African Americans started sharing it with White Folks. Don't corrupt the White Folks! Seriously, tho, the people who will fight it the hardest are the criminals, the cops, the judges and lawyers who get so much money from it being illegal. America can be so ignorant and naive sometimes. Reply
