Man's Foiled Plan: Sell Bear Cubs at Gas Station

Says he shot their mother in self-defense

(Newser) – What do you do with an extra pair of bear cubs? A California man wasn't sure—so he tried to pawn them off at a gas station, according to wildlife authorities who stopped him. Chris Puett says he had shot the cubs' mother when she charged him at his home. He was left with the 11- and 13-pound cubs, Fox 40 reports.

Now the cubs are being shipped to a rehab facility for the summer and fall; afterward, officials will release the tagged animals into a den. Most bear cubs survive the process, authorities say. To validate Puett's story, officials are also seeking the mother's body. Fox has some remarkably cute video of the cubs.
