(Newser) – Downer of the day: A fire last night at a strip mall in Miami killed 30 puppies, reports the Miami Herald. The pups died of smoke inhalation—all were French and English bulldogs, breeds known for having respiratory trouble. Firefighters were able to rescue a handful, but the owner of Beverly Hills Puppies says most of those in the store died, reports WSVN-TV. The bulldogs sell for $2,000 apiece. No word yet on what caused the fire.

Were they really going to sell all 30 of them, at 2,000 apiece? I don't think so. As sad and tragic as this story is, they're probably better off. Pet shops -- especially the chains that deal with puppy farms -- should be outlawed, or at the very least, regulated. Adopt from shelters.

I have a real problem with this story.  I know cases like this probably happen every day around the world, only thing is this isn't really news - it serves no purpose for me to know this other than to bring pain and sorrow into my life and that of others.  If there was a take away of any sort it would be different but their isn't, it's just sensationalism at its worst.

This has insurance fraud written all over it.  I suspect the business was doing poorly.
