No. 4 Duke Handles Hokies 81-64

(Newser) – There was no upset for Virginia Tech this time, as Duke rode an 18-9 second-half run to an easy 81-64 victory in front of a disappointed Hokies crowd. Two top-ten Blue Devils teams have fallen to Virginia Tech since the latter's move to the ACC three years ago. Also in ranked college hoops:

  • No. 15 Butler shut down Loyola of Chicago early, getting 15 points from Pete Campbell in the 63-50 victory.
  • No. 23 Xavier ambushed No. 16 Dayton, who shot just 30% in the 69-43 upset.

The senior scored 26 points in the win as the Musketeers move on to the Elite Eight this Saturday. Xavier looked ready to hand the game over to West Virginia late in the second after blowing a lead that had ranged as high as 18 points, but luck was on their side. More »

    No Collapse This Year: Xavier Advances Purdue made its run today, but third-seeded Xavier refused to wilt in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, like it did last season. The Musketeers blew a 10-point second-half lead, but answered with seven straight points for an 85-78 win over the Boilermakers, reports the Cincinnati Enquirer.     Duke Dumped West Virginia ended today what Belmont failed to on Thursday: an upset of second-seeded Duke, reports the AP. Joe Alexander had 22 points and 11 rebounds as West Virginia held the Blue Devils to 38% shooting, out-rebounding them 47-27 in the 73-67 victory. Duke has now missed the Sweet Sixteen 2 years running, after going every year from 1997-2006. More »

    Campbell, Butler Beat USA From Downtown Seventh-seeded Butler was 23-0 when making eight 3-pointers or more going into its first round NCAA Tournament game with South Alabama today; Peter Campbell made sure it was 24-0 all by himself. Campbell scored 26 points, with, yes, eight 3-pointers ,to lift the Bulldogs to an 81-61 win, reports the Indianapolis Star. Campbell made the last six shots he attempted from beyond the arc. More »
