Police Arrest Suspect in Murder of Abortion Doc

Obama 'shocked and outraged' by killing

(Newser) – Police in Wichita, Kan., have arrested a 51-year-old male suspect in the murder of abortion doctor George Tiller, who was gunned down today as he walked into church, the Wichita Eagle reports. Wichita police Capt. Brent Allred did not name the suspect but did say other agencies, including the FBI, are assisting on the case. Tiller, 67, was famous nationwide as a target of pro-life demonstrations and attacks.

One of the few doctors in the country who provide late-term abortions, Tiller was killed around 10am at Wichita’s Reformation Lutheran Church, where he was a congregation member. He had also been shot and wounded in 1993. Demonstrators blockaded his clinic during 1991’s “Summer of Mercy,” and just this month vandals attacked his practice, causing thousands of dollars in damage. Tiller has also faced many lawsuits and complaints, including one still pending.

Wrong KSU92. The murderer does NOT speak for all right wingers/pro-lifers. As one myself the murder was a dispicable act. The problem is there are extreme people....extreme lefties and extreme righties. Some people bomb a vet's office some people murdrer abortion doctors. Both are extreme, and both are not representative of the entire group. 99.9% of the lefties and righties I meet are down to earth, likable people. I know that all of my peers will be disgusted too when they hear about this shooting. It is deplorable.

The shooter is not a martyr yet. He's not dead. Wrong use of the word. MURDERS should read: Murderer's. Now you imply that all Pro-life people are "Murderer's". Those who attend, lets say a Catholic church, are they all murderer's because they believe in Pro-life? Because women's rights revolve around abortion. Because women should have to choose between a career and future and having a child. We're supposed to have the same rights as men. Yet men don't have to choose between their future and a child. They can have both. If there is a pregnancy out of wedlock or at a bad time, men aren't faced with social pressure to abort even if they don't want to. Yeah, that sounds really feminist to me. I don't support overturning Roe v. Wade. But abortion is not an end all solution to sexism. And its existence does not make us more equal. That said, whoever killed this guy was despicable. I may not have agreed with what he did for a living, but I never would have wished death or harm to him. And anybody that would definitely doesn't have a strong idea of what it means to be pro-life.

@kirei_gaisuto, maybe in this instance religion has not killed anyone (there is simply not enough evidence to make that conclusion), but to say organized religion has never killed anyone is ludacris. Hundreds of military campiagns have been carried out in the name of God. While I agree that in the end, repligion is only used as an excuse to justify horrible acts of violence, there is absolutely no better way to brainwash large groups of individuals than religion. A dispute over a job or a car may be a way to set off one man, but disputes over religion have destroyed entire nations.

That said, yes, many have died in the name of religion, and many have also died by being aborted. This however is not the issue at hand but since you have addressed it, I submit to you that by a very conservative estimate of 1 million abortions per year since 1975, that would put the number of abortions at almost 35 million to date. I think thats going to be much more than those killed in the name of religion. This is not about saving babies. AIDS, Depleted Uranium Munitions, famine and poverty kill millions of little brown fetuses, babies and children every year. The "pro-life" groups don 't care a whit, and make no effort for change. This issue is about dominance and control, about the ability of some "morally superior" adults to control what other adults can and cannot do. Interviews show that about 1/3 of the women attending abortion protests have themselves had abortions, but can justify this because their circumstances were "exceptional." The hypocrisy of the "pro-life" groups extreme, but you cannot appeal to rational thought with people whose real motivation is dominance and control. Reply

I have to agree with you there. Most pro-life groups are hypocritical. Personally, I think the answer is not to make abortion illegal, but to reduce the need for abortion itself. Better access to birth control and better sex education would be a start. As a pro-lifer, the important thing to me is saving lives. If you reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies then you reduce the need for abortion. Also, if you make options better for mothers (cheaper education, jobs that don't discriminate against single moms), fewer women may choose to abort out of necessity. But most pro-life groups are too crazed and hypocritical to do anything that might actually help.

Many people are religious and never harm a single person as long as they live because they choose that. And exactly why are you telling me to grow up? As far as I know the only person involved in this case that went to church was Dr. Tiller. He is held with high regard for his vocation as abortion provider, but yet he was in church. I assume he had religious beliefs he probably believed in a god why is he not labeled a zealot or nutjob or worse by the religion haters? Also everyone here seems to be positing that there perspective is correct but based on what set of guiding principles? Those that evolution has given to us, Bhudha? Allah? If abortion is just a choice how is it distinguished from other choices. ie. I chose to hit you in the face or I chose to serve you cake. Why is one good and the other bad? If its just a personal choice a "freedom" why should anyone care if someone is raped. The argument could be made that my choice is what is at stake here my own personal freedom to choose. Please someone with a brain why are there good and bad choices. You rale against the christians for believing something but yet you believe in nothing at all and that is more cohesive in your mind?
