NCAA: Alabama Must Vacate 10 Football Wins From '05-07

Team can keep scholarships, bowl win

Share

(Newser) – The NCAA will require the University of Alabama to vacate at least 10 football victories from 2005-07 over rules violations that saw players arrange free textbooks for friends, the Birmingham News reports. The school will also be placed on 3 years’ probation, but the football program won’t lose any scholarships. Other UA programs received penalties that included vacating individual records.

We lost games after the suspensions. It was pretty painful, so we feel like our part of it, we've suffered through a long time ago. - Alabama Coach Nick Saban

what difference does it make. those seasons are well beyond us. They're being suspended because some of the team members gave free books to other students, god forbid we try and help one another with some books to alleviate the cost of education, a cost that is high partially due to sports scholarships to these very students! NCAA has it all wrong. yes, find a way to reprimand them, but this just won't make a damn bit of difference Reply

Reguardless of the nobility of the act of giving books away, it's against the rules.

thats fine, it's against the rules, but what the hell difference does it make to go back in time and remove the wins of the athletes for PLAYING THE GAME! it's not like the books were a deciding factor in the game. the game was won by playing it, not by reading about physics or history or politics or math. If you want to penalize the team then have them pay a fine, or create a 10 year scholarship for under priviledged students (which will set a standard and then probably be extended past the 10 years) (and yes, they probably already have one, but this time make them take it out of the sports budget, or maybe even out of the coaches salary for not enforcing the rules of his athletes)
