House Dems Clear $106B War Funding Bill

Share

(AP) – War-funding legislation survived a fierce partisan battle in the House today, a major step in providing commanders in Iraq and Afghanistan the money they would need for the coming months. Democratic leaders pushing the $106 billion measure had to overcome an unusual alliance. Anti-war Democrats opposed continued war spending, and Republicans condemned $5 billion in the measure to secure a US line of credit to the International Monetary Fund for loans to poor countries.

Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif., top Republican on the Armed Services Committee, contended that Democrats were endangering troops by shifting money to create room for a "global bailout loan program." The vote was 226-202, with only five Republicans voting for the bill and 32 Democrats opposing it. The Senate could move as early as this week on the legislation, which includes $1 billion to fund government rebates for consumers who trade in their old vehicles for more fuel-efficient models.

Basically, Obama has turned Afghanistan into another full-scale ground war, except Afghanistan is a much trickier problem because of the many tribes, the difficult terrain, and the spread out populace of the country. Not really sure Obama is doing the right thing by just starting another massive war. Barack, do what you said and get the hell out! Reply

Either you weren't listening or you are misrepresenting his positions. It was Iraq that he promised to get the combat troops out of-- and he still has a year to do it in. I'm not happy with that, or with the Afghanistan "surge", but I knew what he stood for when I voted for him.

Yes I'm well aware of what he said during the election. He said he would use diplomacy, economic aid, counterterrorism, and pressure on Pakistan to curb terrorism. Instead, it looks like Obama is just starting another full-scale ground war in Afghanistan. AND the US is building 2 new military bases in there, which is EXACTLY what the terrorists hate us for in the first place.

Obama and the other cowardly Democrats know we have no business being in the region, except for protecting oil pipeline investors and funneling ever greater rivers of money to the Pentagon and the war profiteers. He simply does not have the balls to stand up to them, any of them. The real cost is paid by our ground troops. Their only interest in the region is to get the hell out of it. Reply
