Stop Worshiping This Creepy Man

(Newser) – America’s being asked to deify Michael Jackson, “but I can’t get past the creepiness,” writes John Kass of the Chicago Tribune. You know all about his “Willy Wonka-style” ranch, the little boys he slept with there, and the “Jesus juice” wine he allegedly offered them. “What most people are mourning isn’t Jackson, but their own youth.” But you can’t mourn “when half your brain is wondering: What ever happened to Bubbles the Chimpanzee?”

And the way people are reacting to Jackson's death is almost creepier than he was. There’s the “maudlin media coverage,” the pseudo-intellectual gushing about Jackson’s importance, and yesterday’s “creep-fest variety show/memorial service,” complete with that giant image of Jackson with his arms outstretched like Jesus. His own dad is using the death to promote a new record label. “If you don’t think that’s creepy,” says Kass, “then your creep-dar is beyond repair.”

Of course not, the intelligent and compassionate portion of the population is focusing on the accomplishments Jackson made in his life for the same reason.

Michael's confessions in the Bashir documentary said enough. If Jackson wasn't a molester, it was a technicality. Sex or not is a technicality in child molestation. There's the mentality of Michael's naivete which was truly creepy. That aside, I have to agree with many that it is 'our youth' which is being memorialized here. The Jacksons have always specialized in posing and posturing their whole lives. Michael stands for excess and naivete. His memorial would have been more apt for the likes of Curtis Mayfield or Bob Dylan when his time comes, but not for such a vain poseur so utterly devoted to the practice of kitsch in every area of his life and art. Who are you responding to? If it's me, I am not referring to people who were his big fans before he died. I am talking about the vast majority of people (particularily young people, who are my peers) who didn't particularily care about MJ (aside from perhaps liking his music and gawking at his antics in the media) until he died. I think the article is correct; a lot of people making noise about this were never particularity attached to Michael, they were attached to his music. What scares me is that some of the people who used to roundly condemn him seem suddenly changed their tune as soon as he died. How quickly we forget. Quoth polstrod: "Honor the art and not the artist." Wagner was a great artist too, but most people have the sense to admit that some of his personal opinions regarding Jews were horrible. Fortunately we have the option of loving his music without necessarily respecting his antisemitism. And no, MJ in no way compares to Wilhelm Wagner. Obviously you are a fan, so you still have your integrity.

All I know is that an enormous amount of people world wide stopped and took notice when Michael Jackson died. The world press and the world was and is still reacting. Say whatever you want about the guy but not even the return of Jesus would get this much attention. And I agree with the comment that the media has sold a lot of advertising and profited greatly off his death in the past week. Now that he is buried and the ad revenues are dwindling they can toss out the nasty, hate filled and unsubstantiated yellow journalism. Reply

That mourning is happening is clear. However, the spin suggested in the platitudes generated by Sharpton et al suggest the intent to exploit Jackson's popularity for chauvinistic (not necessarily evil) purposes. That Kass calls it honestly, if unpopularly, features favorably on his resume. You may join the crowd, but some of us will think for ourselves. I notice that nobody's defined 'creepy' yet. How about when someone postures to be perceived as wanting or being one thing, but is really after or being something else?

A lot of credible evidence has been coming up for sometime now that support Michael's claim that he suffered from severe, life-changing skin disorders called vitiligo and lupus. Deepak Chopra, Michael's long-time friend and doctor notes, "There’s some recent research that suggests that if children have experienced either physical or verbal, mental, emotional or sexual abuse, then 20, 30 years later they can develop these autoimmune diseases including lupus”. Chopra is not the only one who has been speaking out about this; there are other reputable medical sources, Michael's make-up artists etc. In addition, there are many images of Michael around where skin discolorations and splotches on his chest, arms, hands, etc are plainly visible. Having said all that, I'm aware that it is easier for those who feel contempt for the man to stick to the "he bleached his skin to become white" story. Anyway, that's my two cents re Michael's widespread "'white ambitions" myth. Reply

How many times was the guy accused of sexual abuse? We aren't talking laudering money here or fraud, this is sexual abuse. This kind of behavior shouldn't be encouraged. How about he could be considered "creepy" and an important social figure at the same time? Why are the two mutually exclusive? I am one of those that grew up loving the Jackson's and I do agree a great part of the heartache is reflection on childhood memories. I also have mixed emotions about the adoration I feel for a man who at the very least was extremely inappropriate with children. However, like it or not, Michael Jackson was an iconic American and global figure in pop culture who did in fact contribute to the breakdown of racial barriers. He was also seemingly limitless in his humanitarian efforts. Acknowledging one aspect of who he was doesn't negate the rest of who he was. Reply

It's easy to pick on a deadman but the fact of pedophile and some of the "urban legends" just don't stick conclusively. At those levels of fame and power, he could be as innocent as Jesus and the wolves would still come biting. Reputations at those levels are never NEVER accurate - no many how many "witnesses" or photos that come out of the woodwork - even our prisons prove that many are convicted on false testimony. Think of how many of those "false witnesses" TRULY BELIEVE they were correct versus how many were just lying. There are sad stories of victims testifying with all conviction within themselves against a person who was later found to be innocent. No fault to the victim but it shows how mistaken we all can be. We are human. The accusers of MJ also took money. What loving parent takes money in lieu of justice. MJ was never convicted. Just leave the man alone... and quit hating. Fact is, the man changed culture with dance, music, videos, fashion and his generosity. He did "We Are The World" and a million other events that helped people...and even made Guinness as Most Generous pop star. The whole world WAS affected by his music and persona. Whether or not you like his music or cared about him, the man was a MAJOR force with ANYTHING he came into contact with. He did move culture globally time and again. The prior posters can say "drug addict" yet what do we know of these 'anonymous accusers'? They fail to consider to inform if they may be on drugs themselves of any kind. Prescription? Are you obese? Overweight somewhat? Abusive? Addicted to alcohol? Cast the stone... I am not an obsessed MJ fan but I am a fan. He did great things and affected BILLIONS of people for almost 50 years. To anyone writing negative blurbs, how many people did you REALLY affect for good, even last week? Karma is a bitch. ;-) Reply
