Town Hall Gun-Toters in Same Righty Group

(Newser) – Two men who brought guns to events featuring President Barack Obama belong to the same right-wing organization, Talking Points Memo reports. Chris Broughton, who carried an assault rifle into an Arizona town hall this week, and William Kostric, who brought a handgun to a New Hampshire forum last week, are "team members" of the Arizona chapter of We The People.

According to its website, the group aims to restore "Freedom and Constitutional Order through the exercise of popular sovereignty by all possible non-violent means," and hopes to overthrow a government that "continues to systematically plunder our People's wealth, ignore constitutional checks and balances and destroy the last vestiges of Freedom."

Lessening government will inevitably lead to undemocratic governance by the corporate/militia/organized crime guilds that would take the government's place, but at least Libertarians have been consistent. Really--out of context. Why are the same people who worry so much about gun rights the same ones who care so little about women's rights? Why will they carry an automatic weapon to preserve their own liberty but have a cow if a woman want's to preserve her bodily integrity? For me the problem with right wing extremism is that their beliefs collapse on each other like a bunch of dominos. If you don't trust the government--why do you trust it to execute someone? If you don't trust that your gun is protected by the Second Amendment, why don't you trust that Rowe v Wade protects a woman's right to choose? If you believe that giving a two-year old a mumps vaccine paid for by the government is socialism, then why is it OK for the government to buy a 67 year-old man's hip replacement? If you believe Stonewall Jackson was the real hero of the Civil War then why do you think John Kerry who did as Stonewall did is your enemy? The problem with paradox is that without a pair of docs, you can appear unhinged.

Definitely out of context - the context. believe it or not, was the eighteenth century, not the twenty-first. The revolution is NOT ongoing. @logothete: You commit a fallacy of antiquity, saying that some concept is old, therefore has no value. Thomas Jefferson meant his statement to be true then and in the future. The second amendment is about citizens having some ability to defend and fight back against tyrannical governments, and that is never old worn or tired.

when someone shows up at a political rally, carrying a gun, it makes those who hold different opinions from the gun-bearer a tad nervous about speaking up. who's to say that gun-bearer wont snap and start shooting people? that is how it oppresses others' free speech. there is no good reason to bring a gun to a rally. it is an implicit threat. and threats are protected by neither the 1st nor 2nd amendment.

Jefferson who was in France in 1787 and had nothing to do with the Constitution went out of his way with Madison to include the things that are our real freedoms. Among other things, I understand it to mean the opposite of a standing army, which the Framers were well acquainted with from their experience in Europe. New centuries bring new challenges, and the 2nd amendment, to many, seems out of step with the times. Reply

Yes, they are afraid of the guns. Never mind that law-abiding gun owners don't go around killing people. In their minds, it's the evil guns that force good people to go bad and start firing in all directions. There's an article where the writer speculates that liberals emphasize the gun's "potential for abuse" over its actual abuse because they are afraid that if they had a gun, THEY would misuse it. The fact that the handguns remained safely in their holsters and the rifle remained safely slung over the owner's back is a fact that escapes their notice. Actually, here in Arizona it is not uncommon or illegal for someone to walk down the street with a holstered pistol on his or her hip. The only people who take any notice of it are news reporters, out of state liberals, and conservatives who wish their state offered as much freedom as ours does.

This really is a win, they achieved their ends, non-violently and garnered a ton of attention by using their rights within the confines of the law. Did anyone see the Chris Mathews interview? Chris tries to discredit him with this sham distraction of the birther movement and the guy handles it like a pro. I can taste the fear in this country right now. Its nice, watching the desk jockeys squrim. Its like drug policy in Portugal. Gun control increases violent crime, we have 40 years of direct evidence to prove it. Sucks to live in Chicago. Reply
