Opposition to School Speech 'Silly': Gibbs

Obama press secretary also hints at possible racially-driven censorship

Share

(Newser) – Robert Gibbs fired back today at critics of President Obama's planned address to school children, calling it "a little bit of the silly season," the Hill reports. Noting that that Ronald Reagan and the elder President Bush both made school addresses, he painted Obama's critics as censors, making a reference to school districts that "won't even let" students "read Huckleberry Finn."

Gibbs also mentioned that the president’s planned message, to stay in school, is shared by the National Basketball Association. “If staying in school is a political message, then somebody should tell the NBA,” he said. “I think we've reached a little bit of the silly season when the president of the United States can't tell kids to study hard and stay in school.”

I can't believe people are so upset over Obama's appearance and message towards the public schools... They're government funded! And what kid wouldn't want the chance to meet or hear the president of his/her own country!? Reply

The stupidity and bitterness of these people boggles my mind absolutely. They're completely convinced that Obama is some evil communist dead set on indoctrinating their children. Why are stupid people so loud?

How many times are you going to post that link godawgs? And what's your point anyway? OF COURSE the party out of power is going to criticize the sitting President. What is incriminating about that? The problem is when idiots on the right make the quantum leap from "he's giving a speech to kids" to "he's trying to brainwash our kids with his socialist agenda". The left simply criticized Bush for the cost of it. You see the HUGE difference here? The type of inflammatory bullshit in right's playbook is rarely used by the left. They're too meek to pull stuff like that.

@ford no they said it was paid political advertising. Also, my main point here is that the left has been trying to make this about race, and the right doesn't want it because President Obama is black, but they all forget about how the left acts. I don't like it when the main argument is something so easy as it's because he's black. Most people on the left will not admit that there party does the exact same thing they are bitching about the right doing. so you post a link to each person that claims this all because President Obama is black or says withc certain authority that the left would never do anything like this.... Also since Bush's speech happened Pre-Internet I really think that slowed down, i mean this is a much bigger deal then it should be because of access to the Internet don't you think?
