China Frees Waitress Who Killed Bigwig in Sex Attack

Woman became a folk hero for standing up to corrupt official who assaulted her

(Newser) – A Chinese court has freed a waitress who fatally stabbed a Communist Party bigwig as he sexually assaulted her, the Telegraph reports. Deng Yujiao, 21, slashed the official with a pocket knife after he forced her onto a couch, demanded sex, and slapped her with wads of money. The case sparked widespread anger in China and a huge online campaign to ensure she received a fair trial. She was convicted of causing injury but freed because she turned herself in and suffered from "mood disorders."

"Deng Yujiao is a metaphor for someone who fights back against officials, and of course the officials are those who spend the taxpayers’ money, who are so abusive to ordinary citizens and so corrupt,” said one professor. “It’s almost a stereotype of the online image of officials. That’s why this case becomes so big.”

The case is definitely a milestone. It is a legal lesson to all Chinese women, who now know that it is rightful, and nothing to be afraid of, to defend themselves against violence.

Don't be naive, folks. If you know anything about Asia you realize that some heavy cash had to change hands to keep the girl from receiving the death penalty, much less to free her. My guess is that she either had tremendous financial resources or was able to use her charms on another high-ranking official to win release. Still, it's heartening to see a cute girl knife some bureaucrat and get away with it! Reply

If you know anything about Asia then you would know that her coming forward is a big step in itself. Most countries in Asia view rape or sexual assault as the woman's fault and is considered very shameful for her family. Most women that do bring accusations forward are immediately dismissed. This woman not only came forward but received a trial and even won. And if you know anything about Asia then you should know that the pay there for a waitress isn't much and therefore it's pretty impossible for her to bribe the DA. I'm glad you like to sour a step in the right direction with your negativity.
