(Newser) – Happy "overshoot day." Eight months into 2015, the global population has used up a year's supply of natural resources, meaning we're now in "ecological debt," reports the Guardian, via the Global Footprint Network. The GFN measures "humanity's annual demand for the goods and services that our land and seas can provide" and comes up with a date at which time our demand "exceeds what Earth's ecosystems can renew in a year." It says we're now consuming the equivalent of 1.6 planets, though we could reach two planets by 2030. We first exceeded Earth's capacity in the 1970s. Overshoot day comes sooner each year; we hit that day on Aug. 19 in 2014. (Read more natural resources stories.)
