Despite heavy spending on original content, Netflix can't keep viewers away from favorites for long. Just six Netflix shows are in the top 20 shows streamed on devices connected to the US service in 2018—accounting for 70% to 80% of US Netflix viewing—and only two, Orange Is the New Black and Ozark, are in the top 10, according to Nielsen data shared Tuesday. Nielsen's Brian Fuhrer tells Adweek that viewers like to stick to a show once started. The top five streamed shows, The Office in a comfortable lead, each have more than 200 episodes, while Netflix originals typically have fewer than 100, "are viewed, and then people move on," Fuhrer says, though he adds Netflix shows do better in average ratings per episode. The top 10 shows on Netflix, based on total minutes streamed:

  1. The Office (US): 52.1 billion minutes
  2. Friends: 32.6 billion
  3. Grey's Anatomy: 30.3 billion
  4. NCIS: 21.2 billion
  5. Criminal Minds: 19.7 billion
  6. Shameless: 18.82 billion
  7. Orange Is the New Black: 18.8 billion
  8. Supernatural: 18.3 billion
  9. Parks and Recreation: 14.9 billion
  10. Ozark: 14 billion
