A teenage surfer died in a shark attack this morning off the French Indian Ocean island of Reunion, reports the BBC. The 13-year-old boy, said to be a talented surfer named Elio, was in a closed-off section of water; the AP notes that a spike in shark attacks has driven officials on the resort island to close off water activities in all but small sections of beach that are watched by lifeguards. Rescuers apparently responded quickly, but weren't able to save the boy. Seven people have now died since 2011. (More shark attack stories.)
