Made in China: Toxic Baby Formula
Public health authorities in China are investigating a brand of baby formula after as many as 60 babies who drank it developed kidney stones.   (AP Photo)

Baby formula made in China has been found to contain melamine, the same toxic substance that contaminated pet food and poisoned thousands of US dogs and cats last year. None of the formula is in the general US food supply—but some may be on the shelves in American Asian and ethnic markets, USA Today reports.

“We're not aware of anyone finding it here, but knowing that it happened once before, we want to get the word out," said an FDA official, referring to a similar problem in 2004. As many as 60 babies have been admitted to Chinese hospitals with kidney stones linked to the formula, 700 tons of which have been recalled.
