Cheney: Iraq Self-Governing in 1 Year
Vice President Dick Cheney stands in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, Monday, Nov. 26, 2007, as President Bush and Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, not shown, met.   (Associated Press)

Politico sits down for a rare interview with Dick Cheney, where the vice president once again predicts that Iraq will be fully self-governing—this time, he says, by January 2009. Cheney also cautions against an early withdrawal of American forces from Iraq, which for him sends the message that "if you kill enough Americans, you can change US policy."

Cheney lambastes congressional Democrats for producing "absolutely nothing that I can see that’s of benefit." He faults party veterans who "march to the tune of Nancy Pelosi," and in particular targets his friends John Murtha and John Dingell for "not carrying the big sticks I would have expected." On the most recent intelligence report on Iran, Cheney is sanguine: "I don’t have any reason to question what the community has produced." (More Dick Cheney stories.)
