New Twitter Rules 'Leave the Door Open' for Ads

Twitter’s new terms of service allow advertising, although the company has not proposed or implemented any yet, the East Bay Business Times reports. "We leave the door open for advertising. We'd like to keep our options open, as we've said before," wrote creative director Biz Stone. The new TOS also make it explicit that users own their rweets.

In the past, Stone has said running traditional banner ads was not something Twitter was interested in, but “facilitating connections” between businesses and individuals in “meaningful ways” was “compelling.” The introduction of the new TOS raises the possibility that the firm is considering a Google-esque targeted ad service based on the content of tweets, or a way to automatically recommend company feeds to potential customers.
