Adopted Boy Rejected, Sent Back to Russia—Alone

A 7-year-old Russian boy who had been adopted by a woman in Tennessee was sent back to Russia by his adoptive mother, with a note saying that she wanted to cancel the adoption. Torry-Ann Hansen, an unmarried nurse, claimed that the orphanage in Siberia that placed the boy with her misled her about his behavioral problems. Hansen put the boy, Artem Savelyev, on a flight as an unaccompanied minor, and paid a Russian man online to pick him up from the airport in Moscow and take him to the city's education ministry.

In the note, she said, "I am sorry to say that for the safety of my family, friends, and myself, I no longer wish to parent this child."
