Mitt Romney’s attempts to massage his Mormon faith are causing grumbles in Utah, the New Republic reports. Many criticize Romney for downplaying key beliefs to win over mainstream Christians who traditionally loathe them. “I understand he has to appeal to them,” said one Mormon, “but it makes me, as a Mormon, feel very, very queasy to see him doing it.”

Romney still enjoys LDS support, raising $4.6 million in Utah, but his evasions are starting to ignite Mormon bloggers and talk-radio. Harsh rhetoric about polygamy angered many, as did not-quite-lies about the Mormon second coming. “I think people are starting to realize he’s going to do whatever it takes,” one critic said, “whether it’s good for the church or not.” (More Mitt Romney stories.)
