US drone strikes step up in Waziristan border region

(Newser) – Three missile strikes by US drones along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border today have killed 16 people, reports AP. The Waziristan strikes come just two days after another drone attack killed a top al-Qaeda commander. The sudden flurry suggests that the US has located other high-value Taliban or al-Qaeda targets—or that the dangers in the region have increased, say security experts.

Since the May 2 attack that killed Osama bin Laden, both al-Qaeda attacks and US missile strikes have stepped up around Pakistan. More than 150 people have died in suicide bombings and other attacks, carried out in retaliation for the assassination of the terrorist leader. While many Pakistani leaders have demanded the US stop using drone attacks, Washington has continued. (Read more Pakistan stories.)
