Anthony Weiner stuck to script: He resigned his congressional seat this afternoon as expected. Weiner again apologized, "particularly to my wife, Huma," and said the "distraction that I have created" by his sexting scandal made it impossible for him to stay in office, reports CNN. (Read the full text here.) He spoke for only a few minutes and again heard from rowdy hecklers, including Benjy Bronk of the Howard Stern show in a repeat performance, notes TMZ. (See video in the gallery.)

The good news is no more stories like these. The bad news? Weiner was actually a pretty good congressman, writes Chris Smith at New York. "Weiner loved this city, he loved politics, and he had the talent to use the latter to make the former a better place." A showboat, yes, but he also did good things when the cameras weren't rolling. "We’ve all lost something with Anthony Weiner’s political demise." (More Anthony Weiner stories.)
