Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor is in critical condition after being shot by an intruder at his Miami home and airlifted to the hospital early today, the Miami Herald reports. Taylor, 24, a 2004 first-round draft pick from the University of Miami, has been out of commission with a sprained right knee for the past 2 weeks.

Family members requested that details not be made public, but a police spokeswoman said Taylor's girlfriend called 911 at around 1:45am reporting that he had interrupted intruders attempting to enter his home. He had been shot in the groin. Taylor has been in trouble with both the law and Redskins officials, ESPN reports, but seemed to settle down after becoming a father for the first time last year.
