In what police call a "very gruesome" case, a pair of British tourists have been found dead today on an island in Thailand, apparently beaten with a nearby hoe that was covered in blood, the AP reports. A 24-year-old man and 23-year-old woman were discovered, mostly naked, on a beach of Koh Tao island, a popular spot for diving. "The man was chopped in the back and on the side of his head, while the woman was chopped in her face," says a police rep.

The two appear to have come to the island separately and met as guests in the same hotel, which AFP reports was a budget resort. CCTV footage shows they left a bar together at about 1am. "We don't know who the suspect might be yet, but we have talked to different witnesses who might lead us to some clues," the police spokesman says. Britain's embassy says it's ready to help, the Guardian reports. Piers on the island of about 2,000 have been barred by residents to ensure the attacker can't escape, local media report. "It was the first time this has happened on the island. I have never seen anything like this," says a resort worker. (More tourists stories.)
