(Newser) – Michael Cohen has returned to the Democratic Party after a short but extremely eventful absence. A defense attorney for President Trump's former personal lawyer confirmed Thursday that Cohen has changed his New York state registration from Republican to Democratic because he wants "to distance himself" from the values of the current administration, the AP reports.

Cohen, who publicly broke with the president earlier this year and struck a plea deal with prosecutors, worked for Trump for more than a decade but didn't change his registration from Democratic to Republican until last year, when he became deputy chairman of the Republican National Committee’s finance committee, Axios reports. (There was another high-profile switch to the Democratic Party this week.)
