(Newser) – Condolences are pouring in after the death of Rep. Elijah Cummings, who died early Thursday at the age of 68, and his widow was among the first to speak. CBS News reports on the statement from Dr. Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, herself chair of the Maryland Democratic Party. In it, she remembers her late husband as "an honorable man who proudly served his district and the nation with dignity, integrity, compassion, and humility." She noted that Cummings "worked until his last breath because he believed our democracy was the highest and best expression of our collective humanity and that our nation's diversity was our promise, not our problem," before adding: "I loved him deeply and will miss him dearly."

President Trump—who the Hill notes went after Cummings multiple times this summer, attacking both the congressman personally and the Baltimore-area district he served—also offered his thoughts on Cummings' passing. "My warmest condolences to the family and many friends of Congressman Elijah Cummings," Trump tweeted Thursday morning. "I got to see first hand the strength, passion and wisdom of this highly respected political leader. His work and voice on so many fronts will be very hard, if not impossible, to replace!"
