With the Fourth of July fast approaching, Americans are aware that the holiday will seem more low-key this year. Despite state reopenings, large celebrations are mostly still canceled to stop the spread of COVID-19, and as WalletHub notes, it may feel especially hard to muster up flag-waving spirit with renewed calls to attention on police brutality and racial inequities. WalletHub looked at more than a dozen metrics in two categories—military engagement (e.g., share of veterans and active-duty personnel) and civic engagement, which includes active voters and volunteers, among others—to see where pride in county is still going strong. Read on for the top 10 states:

  1. New Hampshire
  2. Wyoming
  3. Idaho
  4. Alaska (No. 1 in "Military Engagement" category)
  5. Maryland
  6. Utah (No. 1 in "Civic Engagement" category)
  7. North Dakota
  8. Wisconsin
  9. Minnesota
  10. South Carolina
See how other states rank here. (If you just want to be happy, these states beckon.)
