'I'm Not Anti- Gay,' Says Would-Be Surgeon General
'   (Associated Press)

Despite arguing in a paper that homosexual sex is unnatural and a health risk, President Bush's nominee for surgeon general testified yesterday before a senate committee that he is not anti-gay. Kentucky cardiologist James W. Holsinger Jr. admitted his 1991 paper for the United Methodist Church was not scientific and that much of the thinking is outdated.

"I have a deep appreciation for the essential humanity of everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation," he said. The study was raised as the hearing centered on Holsinger's willingness to stand up to political interference from the White House. He said he would put science above politics. "If I were unable to do that I would resign," he said. (More James W. Holsinger stories.)
