Here’s a story with a very different outcome than Constance McMillen's: Derrek Lutz’s school told him he couldn’t wear a dress and heels to the prom—but after friends started a petition and a supportive Facebook page, he was allowed in, dress and all. “Yea, I’m a cross dresser,” the aspiring fashion designer tells CBS, adding that he had planned to attend the dance regardless of the school’s final decision.

The 18-year-old New Jersey high school senior, who brought a female date to Saturday's dance, was called to the principal’s office Thursday and told his planned attire (a knee-length black dress) was a dress-code violation. The school changed its tune after—Lutz thinks—consulting its legal adviser. “What makes me a woman is inside and it doesn't really matter what's on the outside,” he says. “And everyone should really just be treated equally.”
