A late but strong contender for crime story of the week: Police in Zimbabwe say three women sexually assaulted scores of male hitchhikers over the last two years, apparently so they could collect semen in condoms for religious rituals, reports CNN. The trio, in their 20s, were arrested after a car accident when police found 33 used condoms in their vehicle.

Since their arrest, "17 men came and positively identified the women as having raped them," said a police official in Harare. "Most of the men said the women would offer a drink either laced with something to tranquilize them or were forced at gunpoint." A sociology professor tells CNN that semen is used in local rituals by people who believe it will get rid of bad luck. (More Zimbabwe stories.)
