The world got its first look at James Holmes since the 24-year-old allegedly killed 12 people in a movie theater shooting at the Dark Knight Rises premiere. He appeared in court for the first time today with red/orange hair, and the AP calls him "wide-eyed and unshaven as he sat staring down," often blinking rapidly. In a livestream, 9News.com discussed Holmes' vacant appearance, and CNN says his "expression … changed little" and he was "mostly … staring off into space."

CBS News tweeted a photo of Holmes. Formal filing of charges is one week from today, but a Colorado district attorney says it will probably be at least a year before Holmes stands trial, since it will take months to decide whether to pursue the death penalty, the AP reports.
