Police have stepped up campus patrols after a University of Wisconsin-Madison student was found apparently stabbed to death in her apartment Wednesday. The 21-year-old pre-med junior is the first Madison student murdered since 1996, reports ABC News. But police are investigating possible links to an unsolved murder in the city earlier this year, according to the Capital Times.

The woman's live-in fiance, who found the body, is reportedly not considered a suspect. "At this writing no suspects have been identified and detectives have not ruled out that this may have been a random act," said a police spokesman. An initial police examination indicated that "death was due to a complexity of traumatic injuries," reported the Badger Herald campus newspaper. (More murder stories.)
