(Newser) – Irate Rick and Morty fans are furious over a McDonald's stunt that went badly wrong, the BBC reports. Caving to a running gag on the popular TV show, McDonald's offered to hand out a limited edition of a defunct Szechuan dipping sauce at its shops on Saturday. But per Fox News, fans who lined up for hours outside the golden arches in many states were calling for a boycott after learning the outlets had only a few packets to give away—and in some cases none at all. "We want sauce," people chanted, with police called to restrain them at some locations. An angry crowd in Newark, NJ, held up protest signs, per the Guardian. "1000+ people camped out to get #szechuan sauce but McDonalds had 70," one annoyed fan tweeted.

"Drove 4 hours at 6am ... no sauce, wouldn't even give us a poster," another complained. "McDonalds you suck. Only 10 posters & 20 packets … to a store," tweeted a third. The condiment craze dates back to 1998 when McDonald's launched the spicy sauce to promote the movie Mulan. Rick, one of the stars of the snarky science-fiction cartoon, makes it his mission to get some, explains the Huffington Post, resulting in sauce-themed memes and prompting a petition. McDonald's finally agreed to a "really, really limited release" of the sauce and was left apologizing for the snafu. "We hear you & we're sorry," the company tweeted. Some enterprising customers managed to score some packets and promptly hawked them on eBay for hundreds of dollars, per Fortune. (McDonald's sent a jug of sauce to one of the Rick and Morty creators.)
