(Newser) – Cindy Sheehan is retiring from the anti-war movement. In a long, bitter online letter posted yesterday on Daily Kos, the iconic "peace mom" expressed frustration over the Democrats' failure to end the war, and characterized the US as "a country which cares more about who will be the next American Idol than how many people will be killed in the next few months."

Sheehan, whose son Casey was killed in Iraq in 2004, galvanized left and right when she camped outside George Bush's Crawford ranch the following year. Now she says her anti-war efforts cost her her marriage, drove her into debt and drew rabid abuse. "I am going to take whatever I have left and go home," she wrote. (Read more Iraq pullout stories.)
