A cyclist who was run over multiple times on a Utah sidewalk last month died from his injuries. Warren Yoshio Watanabe, 62, was bicycling past Warren's Family Restaurant in the city of Roy the morning of Sept. 20 when a car pulling out of the parking lot struck him. It then reversed, paused, went forward and hit him again. Watanabe was at this point lying on the ground in front of the vehicle, which then once again reversed, paused, and drove forward, this time driving over the man, police say. The car then reversed a third time, drove backward over Watanabe, and then the elderly female driver got out and saw him, KSL reports. At that point, she called 911.

The restaurant's general manager, whose surveillance camera captured the incident, says it seemed like the driver did not realize she had hit a person. Police say the incident does not appear intentional; rather, they think the woman—realizing she'd hit something, but not realizing it was a person—was trying to back up and go over or around whatever she had hit. Watanabe suffered 14 broken ribs; his kidney was shattered and his liver was damaged; and he was not able to breathe on his own. He died Sept. 25. The Weber County Attorney's Office will meet with police to determine whether to file charges. Authorities do not believe the driver was intoxicated, ABC 4 Utah reports. (More Utah stories.)
