Orly Taitz, the lawyer whose efforts to have Barack Obama declared ineligible to be president because he was born abroad, is a candidate for statewide office in her native California. The “birther” queen qualified to run for secretary of state, California’s top elections job, the Orange County Register reports today.

Taitz says she she aims “to clean up the fraud we all have seen in the 2008 election. It is important to bring legitimacy to elections.” And she kicked off her campaign by alleging that a fellow Republican candidate is ineligible to run because he’s committed voter and election fraud. Still, the newspaper adds, whoever wins the Republican nod will be a heavy underdog to Democratic incumbent Debra Bowen (who has herself slapped down a Taitz lawsuit).
