Dana Milbank sees a Republican party going off the rails thanks to the "purity putsches" of the Tea Party, Glenn Beck, and others. And May 8 may end up being the tipping point, he writes in the Washington Post. Bob Bennett's defeat in Utah grabbed the big headlines, but just as ominous was news from Maine, where the state GOP adopted a "manifesto of insanity: abolishing the Federal Reserve, calling global warming a 'myth,' sealing the border, and, as a final plank, fighting 'efforts to create a one world government.'"

The GOP also has candidates being attacked for believing in evolution, and a former maverick flip-flopping about danged fences. What's going here? Beck is correct when he says, in reference to Bennett's defeat, that people in DC "should be terrified," writes Milbank. "We should be terrified—particularly the Republicans, whose party is turning into this One-World-Government, Obama-worships-Satan, Jesus-opposes-climate-bill mélange." (More Tea Party stories.)
