McDonald's has put out a recall on some 12 million Shrek: Forever After drinking glasses, after a gentle prodding from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. An anonymous tip to Rep. Jackie Speiers last week revealed that the paint on the glasses contains the toxic metal cadmium, a carcinogen that can cause kidney, lung, intestinal, and bone damage.

Speiers alerted the Commission, which suggested a recall, and McDonalds voluntarily obliged. Customers are urged to keep the glasses away from kids, and return them for a refund. Speier commended the quick action, but told the LA Times that big companies should try harder to keep “potentially dangerous elements from ever hitting their shelves.” (More McDonald's stories.)
