A Michigan man has his dog—and a few too many margaritas—to thank for saving his life. Dog Kiko sensed a problem with Jerry Douthett's toe and decided to chew it off when Douthett fell asleep after a day of heavy drinking. Turns out the man was in denial, and had refused to seek medical attention for then-undiagnosed diabetes, reports Michigan Live.

"He ate it. I mean, he must have eaten it, because we couldn't find it anywhere else in the house. I look down, there's blood all over, and my toe is gone," says Douthett, who claims that the Jack Russell terrier saved his life—tests revealed he had an infection down to the bone. "I would have never went to the doctor if it wasn't for this." Before getting the rest of his toe amputated, he joked with the nurse, "Can I keep the rest of the toe to give to Kiko as a treat?" Kiko is under house arrest until Thursday to determine if there is a threat of rabies. Read the full article. (More diabetes stories.)
