Texas police are investigating whether Riley Ann Sawyers, known as “Baby Grace,” was routinely abused by her mother and stepfather before they allegedly killed her, stored the body, then dumped her in Galveston Bay, reports the AP. In an affidavit, Kimberly Trenor said they beat the girl, held her underwater, and threw her across a room before disposing of her body.

The 2-year-old suffered three skull fractures. A fisherman found her body in the bay, and authorities spent weeks trying to identify her before the child's paternal grandmother came forward with the toddler's identity. Trenor’s husband wrote, "My wife is innocent of the sins that I committed," before a failed suicide attempt. (More Texas stories.)
