Occupy's New Target: Iowa Campaign Offices

Planned protest would run up to the Jan. 3 caucuses

(Newser) – Occupy Des Moines activists are planning to camp out at and "shut down" campaign offices in the week leading up to the Iowa caucuses, and they have invited protesters from around the country to join them. One organizer described the plan, dubbed the "First in the Nation Caucus Occupation," to CNN as "people coming to Iowa, occupying every presidential (candidate’s) office, shutting them down until they start talking real turkey about what’s going on in this country."

And he means "every" candidate—President Obama’s office won’t be spared during the planned Dec. 27 to Jan. 3 event. Asked if the protest might disrupt the caucus, the organizer replied, "We’re not going to prevent anybody from voting. We’re not against the actual electoral process. We’re against the people who own it right now." A member of Iowa’s GOP Central Committee scoffed at the plan. "All they will do is create a lot of overtime hours for the Des Moines Police Department," he said. (Read more Occupy Wall Street stories.)
