Her case is so well known that it spawned the term "Bobbitted" to refer to a male who's had his penis mangled by a lover. Now Lorena Bobbitt is speaking out about the time in 1993 she cut off her husband's penis while he slept and what her life has been like since. She alleges John Bobbitt came home drunk on June 23, 1993, and raped her before falling asleep. Suddenly, after years of abuse, "I found myself in the street with a penis in one hand and the knife in the other," Bobbitt, 46, says during an appearance on the Steve Harvey Show, per Stuff.co.nz. She adds her ex-husband tried to contact her after she was acquitted of malicious wounding by reason of temporary insanity. "But I always deleted his number," she says, per People. "I have a new life now and I just want to focus on what is positive."

Bobbitt—who lives in Virginia with her new husband and 9-year-old daughter—says she now raises money for victims of domestic violence through her nonprofit Lorena's Red Wagon, founded in 2008. "I wanted to bring hope to these children and to these women of domestic abuse," she says. "Something good has come out of my, you know, negative." Asked how her husband feels about the 1993 incident, Bobbitt says he "never brings it up." He's "a gentleman" and "treats me like he's supposed to." John Bobbitt, who was also acquitted of marital sexual assault, had his penis reattached in a nine-and-a-half-hour surgery and went on to star in two porn films, including Frankenpenis, per the San Francisco Chronicle.
