The US market's recovery from a dismal start to the year extended to fifth week after yet another strong gain. The Standard and Poor's 500 index closed up for the year for the first time Friday. The Dow Jones industrial average turned positive Thursday. Both had been down more than 10% for the year a little more than a month ago. On Friday, heath care stocks and banks, which have been particularly hard hit this year, rose the most. The Dow rose 120 points, or 0.7%, to 17,602. The S&P 500 rose 8 points, or 0.4%, to 2,049. The Nasdaq composite rose 20 points, or 1%, to 4,795. (More Dow Jones stories.)
