Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte is in yet another controversy, but this time it's not about his alleged mass killing of drug suspects, or throwing people out of helicopters, or threats to shoot women in the vagina, or even to eat terrorists' livers. This time, it's that he called God "stupid" in front of a nation that is 80% Catholic and 90% Christian, reports Bloomberg. Specifically, Duterte ridiculed the Bible's story of creation with Adam and Eve, reports the BBC. "Who is this stupid God?" Duterte asked in a televised speech. "You created something perfect and then you think of an event that would tempt and destroy the quality of your work," he said. He went on to say it's absurd that humans would be tainted as a result, and that only a "son of a bitch" God would permit that, per CNN.

"You weren't born yet, but now you have original sin," he said. "What kind of religion is that? I can't accept it." Not surprisingly, the backlash has been furious, with a local bishop calling Duterte a "madman" while urging people to pray for him. A presidential spokesman later said that Duterte's personal beliefs about religion should be respected, adding that they were shaped by Duterte being molested by a priest as a boy. On Monday, Duterte wasn't backing down amid the backlash, reports CNN. He said his comments were generally directed at foreign priests and nuns who have been criticizing him, particularly an Australian nun named Sister Patricia Fox that he is trying to deport. "Your God is not my God because your God is stupid," he said Monday. "Mine has a lot of common sense." (More Rodrigo Duterte stories.)
