His team opened its season Wednesday night with a victory, but Sacramento Kings coach Mike Brown declined to talk basketball in the post-game news conference. Instead, he opened with a statement about the mass shooting in Maine, reports USA Today. "It's a sad day," said Brown, who the Sacramento Bee notes was Coach of the Year last season. "It's a sad day for our country. It's a sad day in this world, and until we decide to do something about it, the powers that be, this is going to keep happening and our kids will not be able to enjoy what the United States is about because we don't know how to fix a problem that's right in front of us."

When he finished his statement, a reporter tried to ask Brown about the game, in which his team beat Utah 130-114. Brown declined to go there. "I don't even want to talk basketball," he said. "We played a game. It was fun. Obviously, we won, but if we can't do anything to fix this, it's over. It's over for our country for this to happen time after time."
