This may not elicit much sympathy, but Forbes' annual list of billionaires has shrunk from 1,125 names to 793 this year. Bill Gates lost $18 billion but managed to regain the top spot from Warren Buffett, who lost $25 billion. Here's the top 10:

  • Gates, $40 billion
  • Buffett, $37 billion
  • Mexico's Carlos Slim, $35 billion
  • Oracle's Larry Ellison, $22.5 billion
  • Ikea's Ingvar Kamprad, $22 billion

  • Germany's Karl Albrecht (supermarkets), $21.5 billion
  • India's Mukesh Ambani (petrochemicals), $19.5 billion
  • India's Lakshmi Mittal (steel), $19.3 billion
  • Germany's Theo Albrecht (supermarkets), $18.8 billion
  • Spain's Amancio Ortega (fashion), $18.3 billion
