Surrounded by a small crowd of supporters, ex-DA Mike Nifong entered the Durham County jail at 9 this morning to begin his 24-hour sentence. Nifong was found guilty last week of willfully deceiving the court. He declined to comment to reporters, the News & Observer reports, only locking hands with his wife and remarking, "Nice day."

"We're here for you," one supporter said as Nifong entered the facility to be processed. Among the observers was exonerated Duke lacrosse player Thomas Clute, who  skipped practice to see Nifong locked up. "I wanted to watch vindication," he said. Meanwhile, the AP reports the three falsely accused players are seeking a $30 million settlement with the city. (More Duke rape case stories.)
